Mercedes Escobar’s journey to becoming a Latin Americana powerhouse is a story of perseverance, passion, and breaking barriers. Born in Guatemala, Mercedes confronted numerous challenges as she forged her path in music, often facing cultural obstacles that made her dream seem unattainable. Yet, these experiences fueled her creativity, leading her to create a genre-defying blend of blues, country, and the intensity of Latin American magical realism that she calls “Latin Americana”

Her voice, often described as a cross between Janis Joplin, Chavela Vargas, and Patsy Cline, is a force of nature. Mercedes’ powerful, emotional delivery captures the essence of her stories—tales of struggle, resilience, and cultural identity. In Guatemala, she earned the nickname “la peregrina del blues” (the blues pilgrim), a testament to her pioneering spirit in introducing a new musical genre to her homeland. This is your chances to experience "Latin Americana" with Mercedes Escobar

Mercedes’ dedication and talent led her to the United States, where she received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. There, she continued to hone her craft, blending her roots with new influences. Her song “Sangre Negra” became a finalist in the Latin category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and she contributed to the soundtracks of notable independent films such as Temblores and Cadejo Blanco.

Beyond her musical achievements, Mercedes has been a powerful advocate for social change. She organized the first Pride event in Antigua, Guatemala, and was appointed as an Ambassador Against Violence Against Women and Girls by the United Nations in Guatemala. Her efforts highlight her commitment to using art and advocacy to make a meaningful impact.

Now, Mercedes is bringing her captivating blend of genres to Ely, MN, for an exclusive performance at the Vermilion Fine Arts Theater on September 27th. This concert is more than just a musical event; it’s a chance to experience an artist who has transformed her personal challenges into a powerful artistic statement. Audiences will get a sneak peek of her upcoming bilingual album, co-produced by Grammy-winning artist Gaby Moreno—a collection that promises to showcase her evolution as an artist.

For music lovers seeking an experience that transcends genres, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Mercedes Escobar’s ability to weave together blues, country, and Latin influences with a modern edge sets her apart in today’s music scene. Her Ely performance will be a celebration of resilience, culture, and the transformative power of music.
